The Umbrella Waterfall, located near Sajikot Waterfall in Abbottabad District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is a lesser-known natural wonder. A moderate hike through scenic hills leads to this waterfall, which features a distinctive umbrella-like shape created by the cascading water. In September 2021, we embarked on a journey to Umbrella Waterfall. Our adventure began in Islamabad, where we traversed the picturesque Margalla Hills towards Abbottabad. This route is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, featuring lush greenery, majestic mountains, flowing streams, and the Haro River.
Reaching the Umbrella Waterfall requires a moderate hike through lush green hills and valleys. The trail, while not overly challenging, offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. As one ventures deeper into the wilderness, the sound of the cascading waterfall becomes increasingly audible, adding to the anticipation of the destination.
Attention:
This hike presents challenges due to loose rocks, steep inclines, and potentially wet paths, increasing the risk of slipping. Wear sturdy hiking boots with excellent grip to enhance your safety. I’ve witnessed numerous slips and falls on similar trails. Also, pack plenty of water and snacks, including energy-boosting treats, to sustain you throughout the demanding journey.
The Umbrella Waterfall derives its name from its distinctive shape. The water cascades down a steep cliff face, creating a wide, umbrella-like formation as it falls. The sheer volume of water creates a mesmerizing spectacle, especially during the monsoon season when the flow is at its peak. The waterfall’s unique formation and the surrounding natural beauty make it an ideal spot for photography and nature enthusiasts.
While the Umbrella Waterfall remains relatively unknown compared to its more famous counterpart, Sajikot Waterfall, it is gradually gaining popularity among tourists and locals alike. Its accessibility, combined with its natural beauty and serene atmosphere, makes it a worthwhile destination for those seeking a unique and unforgettable experience.
We spent a few hours marveling at the waterfall before resuming our journey towards Murree. Along the way, we passed the more renowned but less adventurous Sajjikot Waterfall. We decided to forgo a stop there and continued driving. We arrived in Murree after nightfall and returned to Islamabad later that evening.
